Karl Kempton / Kaldron Magazine Papers
This archive is comprised of the papers of Kaldron Magazine (1976-1999, 2003-2007) and its editor, the visual poet Karl Kempton. The longest-running magazine in the United States to focus solely on visual poetry, it was known for its embrace of multiple factions and styles of that genre, from concrete poetry and altered books to calligraphy and asemic writing. During the course of the magazine’s publication, it featured some of the best-known figures in the field from Europe, Asia, Australia, Latin America, the Middle East, and the United States. The magazine included the work of such diverse writers and poets as Bern Porter, Dick Higgins, Philip Gallo, Kenneth Patchen, Doris Cross, Alain Satie, Hassan Massoudy, d.a. levy, Seiichi Niikuni, Rosmarie Waldrop, and many others. This archive is comprised of work gathered by and sent to Kempton through Kaldron’s various incarnations, including for a series of art shows of visual poetry curated and staged by Kempton. The archive also includes Kempton’s own essential work as a visual poet and scholar of visual poetry. One of the key figures in visual poetry scene in America and internationally from the mid 1970s to the present, and the editor one of the most important North American visual poetry magazine of its time, Kempton’s archive present an unsurpassed window into the diversity and richness of visual poetry at the end of the 20th century.
