This archive is comprised of the papers of the poet, publisher, and book designer Jonathan Greene. The editor and publisher of Gnomon Press, from 1965 to the present Greene has published works by poets and writers including Robert Duncan, Cid Corman, William Bronk, Lorine Niedecker, Jonathan Williams, Wendell Berry, Robert Morgan, James Still, Gurney Norman, Harlan Hubbard, Jim Wayne Miller, Ed McClanahan, Jo Carson, Paul Metcalf, Guy Davenport, Gael Turnbull, Basil Bunting, and Anselm Hollo. As a designer, he has created books for Alfred A. Knopf, University of North Carolina Press, The Ecco Press, Graywolf, Copper Canyon, The Jargon Society, Duke University Press, New Directions, Anvil Press, Rizzoli, Ten Speed Press, The University Press of Kentucky, Broadstone Books, North Atlantic Books, Pressed Wafer, Green Shade, and numerous others. He has been called by the Georgia Review, "one of the country's preeminent book designers,” and by James Laughlin, "one of our unsung culture heroes." As one of the longest running small presses in the United States, Gnomon has been for American letters, in the words of Guy Davenport, “one of the brave and distinguished oases of excellence.”
